SIL Summary

This SIL provides information regarding the effect of performing a structural modification not approved by Eclipse Aerospace.

SIL Background

It has come to the attention of Eclipse Aerospace that the Eclipse 500 has been included on the approved model list for certain Supplemental Type Certificates (STC). Some of these STCs include structural modifications that are not approved by Eclipse Aerospace.

Eclipse has also noted cases where modifications were approved by individuals that were not equipped to properly perform a fatigue strength investigation, fail safe strength investigation, or damage tolerance evaluation on friction stir welded structure per 14 CFR 23.571

Eclipse Action

Aircraft with structural modifications not approved by Eclipse Aerospace are not eligible for extension of the service life limit.

Aircraft participating in the life extension program that subsequently perform a structural modification not approved by Eclipse Aerospace will not be in compliance with SB 500-04-006 and will no longer be eligible for extension of the service life limit.

Suggested Operator Action

Structural modifications to the aircraft can have a profound impact on aircraft safety and service life. Operators desiring to incorporate any structural modifications should consult with Eclipse Aerospace PRIOR to incorporation to determine the impact. Operators considering the installation of structural modifications not approved by Eclipse Aerospace should consider the impact of the modification on the aircraft’s service life.
