Weight Off Wheels Maintenance Procedures

SIL Summary

This SIL reviews the proper tooling, procedures, and limitations for simulating a weight off wheels state in certain maintenance procedures.

SIL Background

EAI has received inquiries from owner/operators and maintainers regarding the proper tooling and equipment for simulating a weight off wheels state.

Eclipse Action

EAI has issued this SIL to review the proper tooling, procedures, and limitations when simulating a weight off wheels state. The Aircraft Maintenance Manual (AMM) procedures will be revised to include the limitations regarding acceptable methods of changing the weight off wheels state.

Suggested Operator Action

Owner/operators and maintainers should always follow all applicable AMM policies and procedures. Maintainers should review the Weight On Wheels procedure in AMM-20-00-04-051-801 and ensure the proper tooling is being used.

EAI STRONGLY RECOMMENDS AGAINST USING FOREIGN OBJECTS LIKE STEEL WASHERS TAPED TO THE WOW SENSORS TO SIMULATE A WEIGHT OFF WHEELS STATE. TEMPORARY MEASURES OF THIS NATURE MAY BE OVERLOOKED AND COULD RESULT IN CATASTROPHIC DAMAGE TO THE AIRCRAFT.

In most maintenance procedures where changing the weight off wheels state is required either the Avio Maintenance Computer (AMC) P/N 20-121926-1001, or the Weight On Wheels Simulator Box (WOW Box) P/N 87-117390-1001 can be used.

There are two maintenance procedures with special limitations where use of the WOW box is recommended or required.

The Dual Generator Load Shed Mode Test in AMM-24-60-00-071-801 (Electrical Power Distribution System Modes - Adjustment/Test) is a maintenance procedure where use of the WOW box is not required but is recommended.

The Angle of Attack Test and the Pitot and Static Verification Test in AMM-34-10-00-071-801 (Flight Environment Data - Adjustment/Test) are maintenance procedures that require use of the WOW box. The AMC's Weight off Wheels simulation cannot be used.
