All Aircraft with Aftermarket GPS Installations
SIL Summary
This SIL provides information on the repetitive inspection requirements that may be applicable to aircraft with aftermarket GPS installations.
SIL Background
Some Eclipse 500 aircraft have been modified with aftermarket GPS systems that utilize an additional GPS antenna. These additional GPS antennas have typically been installed on the fuselage crown in either the pressurized or un-pressurized areas. In cases where the antenna has been installed in the un-pressurized area, the aft pressure bulkhead has been modified by adding a hole to accommodate the coaxial cable feed-through. These modifications typically have initial and repetitive inspection requirements established by the FAA at the time of FAA approval.
Eclipse Action
Eclipse has issued this SIL to inform operators of the possibility of initial and repetitive inspection requirements as a result of aftermarket modifications.
Suggested Operator Action
Owner/operators and maintainers should always follow all applicable AMM policies and procedures.
Owner/operators and maintainers of aircraft with aftermarket GPS receivers and additional antennas should carefully review all documents associated with these installations for initial and repetitive inspection requirements. Examples of these documents are logbook entries, FAA form 337, AMM supplements, and FAA DER 8110-3 approvals.
In many cases additional the antenna installations and / or aft pressure bulkhead modifications have inspection requirements such as repetitive High Frequency Eddy Current inspection at non-standard intervals. Some of these intervals start as soon as 189 flights after installation.
Aftermarket GPS receivers are removed from aircraft as part of the upgrade to AvioNG 1.5, 1.7, and IFMS 2.0 and higher. However, removal of the receiver does not alleviate the need for ongoing inspection of the antenna installation and / or the aft pressure bulkhead modification.
