Applicability

All Aircraft with SDUs

SIL Summary

Eclipse Aerospace, Inc. (EAI) has received inquiries regarding the correct value for the latitude setting in the Standby Display Unit's (SDU) installed on Eclipse 500 and Eclipse 550® aircraft. EAI is providing this response in regard to those inquiries.

SIL Background

The latitude value has no impact in normal operations. It only affects performance under Directional Gyro (DG) mode. DG mode may be used at high latitudes or in areas of high magnetic distortion. DG mode is also active if the magnetometer is failed. For an SDU operating in DG mode, the pilot can get improved performance in the form of a lower drift rate if the latitude is set for the area of operation. Once the latitude is set, it is stored in the SDU's Non Volitale Memory and will be retained across power cycles.

Eclipse Action

EAI is issuing this SIL to advise customers regarding the setting.

Suggested Operator Action

Operators should be aware of the benefits of selecting accurate latitude information within the SDU. The latitude should be updated any time the aircraft is moved to a new area of operation by more than 20 degrees.
